Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter Vinyl LP (1999)

REVIEW

A masterpiece!

Immortal’s fifth album is a great job. The fact that “At The Heart Of Winter” has become a role model for others is due to the compositions contained on the album, which, on the one hand, do not lack ambition and present to the listener interesting motives and, on the other hand, simplicity and catchiness, allowing to get caught in the music even less black metal listeners.

Not insignificant is also the considerable traditionality and austerity of music with moderate weaving of flavors and additions to it, which allowed this album to remain up-to-date and not to get old.

The album was cleverly constructed, presenting the most traditionally black, aggressive compositions at the beginning and in the finale. But at the same time, both Withstand The Fall Of Time and Years Of Silent Tomorrow is a presentation of great riffs, the middle of which, included in the first of the listed can even be described classics of Norwegian black, catchy melodies and technical wraps, in which you can initially get lost.

However, much more interesting is the internal part of the album, in which Abbath and Horghem most strongly allow themselves to experiment and shock conservative fans of black metal. First, at a medium, energetic pace, seasoned with the weight and power of Solarfall, wherein stupor can make a long, atmospheric insert in the middle with mandatory in later immortal work Gothic guitars.

The full palette of the new face of the group and therefore, extreme accelerations, melodic, medium-fast playing, frequent, atmospheric inserts, and finally sensationally catchy choruses are for it involving Tragedies Blows At Horizon, one of the best and at the same time extremely underrated immortal tracks, which is a true classic of epic, ambitious black metal.

On the other hand, the marching Where Dark And Light Don’t Differ rubs against heavy metal, inspired by iron maiden achievements, and the icing on the cake are a capital, melodic solo and over-controlled, distorted vocals of Abbath, whose use for entirely unknown reasons caused idiotic accusations immortal for inspiration of techno music and electronics.

The last gem is a moody, atmospheric, but not deprived of the occasional chad and intense title composition, again serving the listener a portion of classic and memorable riffs and technical, ambitious solos.

At The Heart of Winter represents the most significant breakthrough in Immortal’s work by abandoning the band from concise and straightforward music, based primarily on intransigence and ultra-fast singing of drums and guitars.

Although in the years that followed, under the influence of fan criticism, the musicians a little retreated from the audacity to explore such melodic and epic music areas as on the fifth album, they never had to return to playing in the style of Battles In The North or Blizzard Beasts.

And rightly so, because in that release, they performed less well and, above all, too much like most other black metal bands. Meanwhile, despite some of the similarities with bands like Dissection or Dimmu Borgir, At the Heart Of Winter, it is an incredibly original and offers the listener a set of stunning compositions, each of which is a classic Norwegian black metal. And at the same time, it is the best proof that this genre does not have to be played primitively or with a garage or underdeveloped sound.

Therefore, it is necessary to know this record, especially since it is in it that lies the roots of the work of many younger death metal formations and especially the excellent Colombian Inquisition. It can also be easily recommended to people who are not familiar with the work of Norwegians.

Although initially, the songs may seem a little lengthy and overwhelming with the number of guitar riffs, with each subsequent listening is getting better and the album discovers its full multicolored face in front of the listener. In a perfect style, immortal managed to end the twentieth century.
