My Review about “Obsessed by Cruelty”
If there’s a Sodom record that put his little stone on black metal creation, that’s without a doubt “Obsessed by Cruelty.”
“Obsessed by Cruelty” is the first full-length album released by Sodom in 1986. Suppose you haven’t listened to this album yet and intend to, look for the album’s European version.
When Sodom recorded the album, Michael “Destructor” Wulf left the band. Sodom re-recorded “Obsessed by Cruelty” at the request of their record label. Both recordings were eventually released. Steamhammer record label released the new recording (in which there was also the song “After the Deluge“) for the European version.
In contrast, for the American version released by Metal Blade, the initially rejected version was used.
The US release version has terrible recording quality. I mean, you can expect most thrash/black or death/thrash from the ’80s, but on this version, the drums are too loud, and you can barely hear the guitar.
The qualities of this album do not make it anything astonishing or sophisticated. Still, without a doubt, it is a must-see piece of thrash metal history (along with their previous EP “In the Sign of Evil“) for all those lovers of Extreme Metal.
Perhaps “Obsessed by Cruelty” is not as mythical as “Persecution Mania” or as iconic as “Agent Orange.” However, it became one of the top influential and defining albums at the scene, an album that served as a reference and manual for hundreds of bands starting to trace their paths down the extreme metal path.
The lyrics on this album contain a slightly interesting side with “tales,” citing things present in Christianity’s history many times, such as the flood, Sodom, and Gomorrah. But they’re not focused on Christianity, as other songs talk about evil and violence, like ” Witchhammer ” and “Deathlike Silence.”
They’re not impressive and well-written like the lyrics on later albums like “Persecution Mania” and “Agent Orange,” which focused on war themes, but they’re not bad.
Tom Angelripper’s voice here is insane. This album is an underrated early metal masterpiece. If you’re into 80s metal and haven’t heard of this yet, listen to it. I want to single out ” Deathlike Silence ” and ” Real Proselytism ” as the most impressive songs here, but the entire album is above average.
“Obsessed by Cruelty” is a must-buy album owned by any 80s metal fan.
