Honestly could be my favorite record, period. 52 minutes of a naked, intense, exposed, beautiful, bloody, scary account of a shattered love affair. This is what Lou Reed tried to do with his Berlin LP. You may fall into the loser minority who cannot handle how real this woman is and just have to laugh it off, but for the rest this is, just wow...
As repeatedly featured on the Hippie Goddesses bootleg (between songs by Linda Perhacs, Margo Guryan, Carolyn Hester, Lily and Maria, etc), the stuff you haven't heard is just as good if not better. Now a 15 year veteran of the music biz in unworthy situations (like the Laff Records Candy (Terry Southern) knock off record, Ms. Lovett walked into an LA studio in 1974 with some of the great studio dudes and wrote, sang, and produced her first and only solo LP, one of the most ambitious and profoundly female records ever made. Listen as 'This Woman' goes through more changes than Burt Bacharach, marvel at how boring most music sounds next to this true work of art. This is basically a soul album that is so evocative as to be called psychedelic. Cinematic, comparable to, but way beyond, a concept album disco era version of Dusty in Memphis, revolving around sex and loss.
