Ex/ex | This long-lasting German space rock band had a name that sounded like a smokers cough and songs that went on just as long. Out of all the German krautrock bands, Grobschnitt always seemed to be more closely tied to the UK progressive rock movement, culminating in "Rockpommel's Land", the Teutonic version of "Foxtrot" or "Close to the Edge" with similar faux Roger Dean cover art. Things are more Hawkwind space rock on this first one, starting off with a 14-minute track called "Sympony" that should be more accurately titled "Guitar Sympony", what with all the earsplitting fuzz riffs and a full 7-minute soaring speaker-to-speaker acid guitar solo at the end that rivals Clapton's solo in "Layla" for sheer majestic grandeur. Then follows 2 short songs - and by short I mean 6:50 and 3:40, mere flickers on a krautrock candle, really. The first one, "Travelling", sounds like Marillion masquerading as a Santana tribute band, while the second one, the humbly titled "Wonderful Music", sounds a lot like Jethro Tull's "Bourree" with phasing set on stun. After those moderate interludes, we're back into extended space rock territory with the 18-minute "Sun Trip", which begins with a wonderful distorted melody and some trippy solar wind sound effects, as if Grobschnitt themselves were performing live on a comet, hurtling through space and somehow transmitting their concert to us via satellite radio. A big, deep voice comes in and speaks something apocalyptic in German while the wind continues to howl and thunder crashes. Something about "on the first day...on the second day..." from what my limited knowledge of German from Hochschule can discern. 8 minutes of intense German creationism masquerading as Hawkwindian space rock finally gives way to a brilliant quiet echoey break that sounds like the trippy second side of Mandrake Memorial's "Medium" LP. Then a siren wails, followed by the sounds of explosions, gunfire and war, which all build to an intense crescendo of cataclysmic noise. Are Grobschnitt making a grand statement about the rise and fall of the universe in 18 short minutes? Or are they just taking us with them on a journey through the vast emptiness of the cosmos, returning here only to remind us of just how noisy and barbaric life on Earth is, especially in comparison to the tranquility of deep space? Or maybe they're just "kickin' it". Either way, Grobschnitt's first album is a fantastic flowing head trip through space and time, from a talented band who clearly have their head in the psychedelic ether
