Ex/m- | MAXWELL STREET Lp by THE MAXWELLS. Original German pressing on the ultra-collectable MPS Label (CRM 706) from 1969. Seldom seen progressive gem by an obscure band from Copenhagen but recorded in Germany's Black Forest! Just have a look at the inner gatefold for the psychedelic imagery and you can imagine why serious collectors seek this Lp! This set includes the brilliant MAKE IT BREAK IT (superb vocal jazz rock with funky horn stabs) and a groove that changes tempo and direction with breakdowns, percussion riffs and hammond! This arrangement really kicks-off midway with brilliant solos from the horn players and eventually morphs into a deeply ethnic headtrip called BENI RIAMBA! Here the band go all mystical with exotic sounds over psychedelic instrumentation, hypnotic drums, chanting, singing, talking. The ending is particularly mad, just you wait and see! The whole of side one is stunning, especially the calm before the storm of the opening track, ESTHER that starts all beautiful, hazy and icy with echoed flute lines, moody vocals, treated rhodes and psychedelic rhythms before bursting out with jazzy horn solos over a funked-up, progressive groove! The wonderfully expressive vocals and backing harmonies are all sung in English (prog cum acid-folk sounding) for maximum appeal and sound superb throughout! There is actually lots more on this record but we think you get the picture?!? A really enjoyable listen with major DJ / radio potential and a sought-after progressive item anyway so check it out!!!
