Review:
This is among the best sounding CDs I have ever heard. Definitely in the demonstration class. For being a redbook, 16/44 CD, the sound quality beats out numerous SACD and DVD-A recordings I own. The music crisp and REAL and you can feel the percussion through the floor. Now, I only own a low level audiophile set up, I purchased twenty-five years ago. So, I do not have a "state of the art" rig and this CD really does shine on my rig. As far as Karajan's performances go, no worry. The CD was recorded in his final years--in which there were increasing caveats to his performances. There is an exuberance and power captured in the digital sound--no digital harshness, just the REALITY and excitement of one of Karajan's Swan Song performances. "Bolero" is always great fun and the ending let me know this CD was something special when the percussion booms in. "The Great Gates of Kiev" had me blown away.....Another great performance, by late Karajan--and it happens to be his last recording--is his Bruckner Seventh Symphony. The Master Maestro fought on to the end. These late Karajan recordings seem to be part of a series called "Karajan Gold". Here the recordings are all digital and then remastered. All these CDs in the series are probably worth acquiring, if they have such great sound as his, "Mussorgsky: Pictures at an exhibition / Ravel".
