An enjoyable, decidedly Australian take on the “keyboard trio” format. In inimitable Australian style.Chetarca originated from Melbourne, Australia, born in 1972 out of the ashes of the Langford Lever band. They consisted of Paul Lever on lead vocals, harmonica and tambourine, Andrew Vance on keyboards and vocals, John Rees on bass and violin and Geoff Gallent on drums, but heading to their debut they also accepted the talents of Bruce Bryan on synthesizer, he also turned out to be the band's producer.Although they were part of the Atlantic label, their debut was only pressed in about 1000 copies, released in 1975.Chetarca have been characterized as a Blues Rock band going E.L.P. keyboard Prog and I can see the reason why.The opening side of the LP sees the group swirling around bluesy jams and grooves and adding some progressive values in the instrumental sections. With no guitarist in the line-up the sound is heavily driven by the workouts on piano, organ and synthesizer, the music is mainly quite rhythmic with occasional dives into jazzy interludes and quasi-Classical textures.Apparently their most ambitious effort in here was ''The oceanic suite'', a 3-part, 24-min. long epic in an attempt to move some steps closer to the principles of Progressive Rock.More than anything they remind me of Canadians BUSKER with some touches of GREENSLADE.GREENSLADE-like keyboard Art Rock with a dominant Blues influence and lesser extensions to Classical and Jazz Music.Recommended to fans of full-blown keyboard-based music.
When Chetarca broke up bassist John Rees went on to form Men At Work, a quite succesful group of Pop/New Wave/Rock music.
