CANNED HEAT | ASH GROOVE BOOGIE (The formation of Canned Heat evolved in 1964 from Al Wilson, John Fahey and Mike Perlowin's ideas about starting an independant record company to reissue old blues records. Al "Blind Owl" Wilson (b. 1943 in Boston), was a music major at Boston University, who wrote articles on bluesmen like Robert Pete Williams and Sun House, had a high pitched voice with a unique vocal technique and played harmonica and guitar. In 1964 with the help of the blues historian Dick Waterman, Wilson had managed to track down Son House and revive his interest in playing blues, as he hadn't picked up a guitar in twenty years. Strangely enough on the same day in 1964, John Fahey and guitarist Bill Barth (later with Insect Trust) rediscovered elder bluesman Skip James in Mississippi and also brought him out of retirement. Barth and Fahey with another guitarist, Henry Vestine, promoted Skip's appearence at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. Mike Perlowin was another folk blues guitarist having moved to L.A. from New York in 1961. He studied guitar at the Ash Grove's school of folk music, where one of his teachers was Clarence White, then with the Kentucky Colonels. Mike also played in a bluegrass outfit the Four Farfels with future Stone Poney Herb Steiner.)
