Iron Maiden – Killers 1981
Killers is the second studio album by Iron Maiden. It was first released on 2 February 1981 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and on 6 June in the United States by Harvest and Capitol Records.
The album was their first with guitarist Adrian Smith and the last with vocalist Paul Di’Anno.

Iron Maiden – Killers Review
Killers album by Iron Maiden is one of my favorite albums of the group. In love, as I am with the voice of Paul Di’Anno, the productions of Martin Birch, and the compositions of Steve Harris during the early 80s, this recording is the only one that gives me everything in one.
Those musicians were in great shape, with just the right point of experience. With an immense degree of involvement in the band made them travel to Japan and many places worldwide, play as many times as necessary, and sleep in as many grimy hotels. All of this behaving like a small army whose sole purpose was to make good music, the best possible.
Clive Burr was the ideal drummer for a group with a sound so clean and, at the same time, so wild. Dave Murray kept inventing himself in his singular verbiage of notes. Adrian Smith replaced the excellent Dennis Stratton with his sober technique.
Harris was already saddling the horse that made him famous as a bassist Di’Anno just went all over the place. Perhaps less brilliant than the debut lp (Iron Maiden), less “gifted” but much richer in nuances, feeling, and dynamics. He sang in a real trance, and nobody can deny that he transmitted what his rearing heart was dictating to him.
The album is a real gem. After a first production with which they had never been happy (I do like the sound of that first album, but hey), this time, they put themselves in the hands of their beloved Birch, whose collaboration gave them a real rush.
They could not believe that they were recording with the producer of the records that they listened to. With this incentive, they obediently submitted their virtuosity, songs, and sound to whatever “the boss” asked of them.
They did well, very well. Martin Birch was a god of style, and they knew it. He was someone who had praised group,,s that were already huge and had achieved an incredible achievement:
- giving everyone his label and, at the same time
- fully respecting the sound of each gro.up that he had in hand
- always bringing out the best in each musician
- always looking for the masterpiece
His productions will demonstrate it for Whitesnake, Deep Purple, or Black Sabbath.
As for the songs, I take everything. Perhaps the songs on the second side deserve special mention, especially the last two: Purgatory and Drifter, who always knew how to make my hair like spikes.
The end of Drifter is one of those that leaves you nailed, without wanting to move or think about anything that goes beyond what you just heard, suddenly showing the global meaning of the entire album. It’s a feeling of weight, the spiritual equivalent of slow, happy digestion.
