Review by akin: Eela Craig is a kind of late prog band that apart from their debut album in 1971, all their other albums were made in the second part of the 70's decade, when prog was not so strong. But Eela Craig seemed to be a band unaffected by the time and delivered their strongest work in the late seventies. The greatest example is Missa Universalis, a concept album like Electric Prunes' Mass In F Minor and Spooky Tooth's Ceremony, being a Christian mass with prog music (in case of Electric Prunes was a top-notch psychedelic album). Regardless of being a Christian or not, all the three albums mentioned are very good, and specially Eela Craig one, because it is a great prog band at its creative peak and they delivered a symphonic space rock masterpiece in the late seventies. The first song, Kyrie, is clearly the most progressive, elaborated and consequently the best of the album. The song is long, with more than 12 minutes and it is a space-rock fan delight. The song starts with a very beautiful synthesizer intro, with a pompous lead-synthesizer melody over beautiful synthesizer textures. After the intro, the song has a part with spatial synthesizers and chanting like prayer, remembering electronic prog artists at their best. The song continues floating until near the end, where enters regular lyrics with good guitar and organ. Gloria is a more regular prog song, with good electric piano, guitar soloing and synthesizers, including nice brass synthesizers. The singing is very nice, with soft voices and good vocal melody and the main riff has a very nice melody too. Credo is a very good progressive song, with two parts. The first is very soft and mellow, with superb piano and synthesizers, giving and epic appearance to the song. Then, the second part is a funky prog, with a moving riff and great synthesizer use and some nice guitar and keyboard moments. Sanctus is another epic, with a very beautiful synthesizer intro, with spacey sounds and chanting like a prayer. Then the song changes and becomes a mellow prog song, with nice piano riff. The song has beautiful guitar and synthesizer solos in it. The song changes again to a more funky riff, with excellent analog synths and organ soloing. Agnus Dei starts with a very beautiful guitar solo. This song has a more proeminent use of guitar, but not with the spacey synthesizers and beautiful piano. The song has some acoustic oriented riffs, with acoustic guitar, flute and string synthesizers inserted in the heavy synthesizer parts. The last song is the short Amen, with heavy use of synthesizers and Amen chanting, being a very nice song to close the overdose of keyboards and synthesizers this album provides. Overall it is a must have for all the progressive rock fans addicted by synthesizers and keyboards, like me. The three keyboardists manage to do a superb synthesizer work, and Eela Craig is one of those unknown bands that deserved better fame. And although very rare, it is an album that cannot be out of a collection of a prog fan, mainly if he is fan of space prog and electronics, because it is at least one of the top-five of the genre.
